Malta in winter

To better understand why winter in Malta is so awesome let's first start off with a short overview of the summer.

Summer quickly becomes overbooked with pretty much everything. It gets busy and overcrowded, boats are everywhere, prices go up and beautiful landscapes become baked and brown…

But hey! There’s the sea, people come for holidays to have fun and enjoy it, clubs and beaches are full up, it’s hot and sunny… And all that is just fine – if you like it. We certainly don’t mind, as we spend most of our time in the water anyway.

I mean don’t get me wrong – Summer in Malta is great too, especially for someone who is not stuck in the local routine. However, coming in the off season hides plenty of nice surprises!

If you prefer a more quiet experience, less noise and rumble, pleasant temperatures and greenish scenery, then I would say that winter in Malta is your cup of tea.

Winter in Malta

It’s a typical mild Mediterranean winter which resembles Central European spring. Everything comes alive, farmers are farming their crops and Malta’s beautiful landscapes become green and lush once again.

It is also fair to mention the only downside – which is the unpredictable weather. As we all know, weather is getting more and more crazy all over the World due to the global climate change. While rainy days do happen they are not that common in Malta. It’s mainly the occasional strong winds that may spoil the sea if it gets too rough.

Temperatures never drop below 0℃, and usually it’s around 15-20℃ during the winter months. While you might want to wear a jacket on a windy day, and a hoody in the evening, you can get away with just a T-shirt on a calm sunny day.

Other then that, Malta in winter is a perfect getaway resort with plenty to offer.

What can you do in Malta in winter?

If you don’t get too exhausted from freediving or spearfishing and you want to enjoy and explore the island there’s plenty of things to see and do.

You can rent a boat or take a cruise around the Maltese islands and discover beautiful parts of the coast that are only accessible from sea. If you want to focus on a particular area and have a more intimate experience then you can rent a kayak. In that case my top recommendation is to row around the St Paul’s Island or to go out from Golden bay towards Fomm ir-Riħ.

In case you like to walk around urban areas you can do some sightseeing without getting a heatstroke. Renting a bike is another option, or taking a hike and getting lost off road to explore the typical picturesque Maltese countryside and villages.

You could also just simply relax near the sea or take a walk along the beautiful coastline with stunning scenery. Gnejna bay has a lovely beach and beautiful boathouses carved right into the limestone. Riviera beach is right next to it, and definitely worth a trek.

There are also the Popeye village and Blue Grotto – Malta’s very popular touristic attractions. Down in the south there’s St Peter’s Pool in Delimara and on Sunday you can visit the (only) fish market in Malta, in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk.

There’s a lot more to see and do. If you’re interested in getting into it feel free to contact me for more recommendations.

So! To sum it up.

My 2 cents are: A bit of luck with weather + Winter in Malta = Definitely worth a visit.

In our page about Malta & Dive Sites I already mentioned that in Malta you can freedive and spearfish all year round. SPEARFISHERZ got you covered with both summer & winter equipment.

All in all – if you take my advice – remember that there is a possibility to get unlucky with the weather. You’ve been warned! Check the weather forecast well in advance and be prepared.

And if you end up having a great time with awesome underwater experiences, beautiful sunny days and all that, you don’t have to thank me either, it’s my pleasure.

Whatever you choose, and whatever it’s going to be – make sure you get the best out of it!
