FREE KNOWLEDGE SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO ANYONE

While nowadays it’s impossible to get everything for free – for those who really want to learn something and are ready to commit – there should always be an open path to find what they’re looking for, regardless of what they have in their pockets.

For me, it was really hard to learn much about spearfishing when I was just starting out. Therefore I decided to change that for the spearos to come.

I spent years to create my Spearfishing Courses body of knowledge, but now I also have plenty of giveaways to share.

On this page you are going to find some very useful materials, recommendations and advice for both beginners and advanced freedivers & spearos.

TIPS & LESSONS

I like to keep an open mind as it allows me to never stop growing, and every single time I go for a session I learn a lesson or two.

For this reason I created a video series called “TIPS & LESSONS” which comes as a result of personal spearfishing experiences.

Check it out on our YouTube channel and stay tuned for the oncoming episodes:

SPEARFISHERZ – TIPS & LESSONS

WISE SPEARO

WISE SPEARO IS A MYSTERIOUS ENTITY OR SPIRIT, BELIEVED TO POSSESS ALL WISDOM OF ALL THE SPEARO'S THAT EVER LIVED

wise-spearo-2

Sometimes it reveals its presence by “whispering” to us during our spearfishing sessions, giving us life saving advice or hints on how to change our hunting strategy or what to do next.

Numerous spearos around the globe reported “hearing this little voice” telling them what to do just before escaping certain death or landing that one big fish.

Some people refer to it as “instincts”, but you and me – we both know that it’s much more then that! 😉

Most of the advice that you’re going to find here is trivial – but that’s exactly what spearfishing should be like – simple and practical.

IF IT STARTS TO GET COMPLICATED WHILE SPEARFISHING IT’S A WARNING SIGNAL THAT YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG

Some spearos like to keep their catch around their waist. You shouldn’t do this for numerous reasons, especially not on deeper dives. Prevent accidents by not asking for trouble.

If the place doesn’t feel fishy – don’t waste your time – move on.

Do NOT continue descending if you can’t equalize or you start feeling any pain in your ears, regardless of how BIG the fish is – if you continue you are risking an ear barotrauma.

You finally got a day off to go spearfishing… But those nasty black clouds are starting to cover up the sky. If it’s a thunderstorm – there will be lightnings – therefore stay out of the water.

Treat your buddy the same way that you would like to be treated.

If the water conditions are bad at your diving spot – just change the location or go another day.

Hydrate regularly during long sessions – prevent decompression illness.

Don’t shoot a big grouper inside a hole if it’s not facing you directly for a barbecue shot.

Relax . . . . . . . . . . . . . . And no matter what happens during your dive – you must maintain relaxation until you surface.

Always bring a timing device – it’s easy to get carried away, ending up stranded in the dark.

After a longer break the accumulation of mucus is usually the number one reason for troubles equalizing. Normally, at the beginning of the session you will be able to clear the airways by expelling a lot of mucus. This often resolves the equalization problem.

Be patient, wait for the right moment to shoot, but when that moment arrives – don’t hesitate!

Most spearfishing accidents happen due to careless boating. Use multiple buoys of different colours, always swim with a buddy, stay alert and avoid high boating areas altogether.

The sea is calm, flat, but there are black clouds coming…  Beware! It can turn very rough and windy within minutes.

Respect your catch – humanely dispatch the animal as soon as possible.

Losing focus often means losing fish – keep your focus, stay locked in, stay razor sharp.

Never pollute – take your trash with you.

Don’t ignore the bait fish, don’t scare them – get friendly with them & observe their behavior…

Make detailed notes after each session – compare & learn from them.

Check your gear before the session – especially your shooting line & connections.

If you are not sure if your buddy needs help – Help! Better safe, then terribly sorry.

Patience is the mother of fishing.

Sunburn can ruin a spearfishing vacation. Do not use shorty wetsuits. If it’s too hot use thinner suits but make sure to cover your whole body.

Slightest bend in the shaft and you get poor shooting. Try not to vandalize it after the shot.

Straightening the shaft is easier said then done. Professionals rather tend to get a new one.

Don’t just watch YouTube spearfishing videos – study them – it’s an encyclopedia of spearfishing knowledge.

We all know that predators are attracted to blood. Depending on the type of predator – you can either use that to your advantage, for example using dead fish as bait, or – you can get in trouble if there are dangerous sharks or crocks swimming around.

Be careful how you manage bleeding fish while spearfishing in big predators domain.

Never make a dive while feeling angry or frustrated.

If you found a spot full of fish – don’t take them all, leave others to grow, procreate and attract other fish. Be sustainable.

If you wipe it out you will destroy it for good. If you are sustainable then you can come back again after some time, and catch another fish or two every once in a while.

Do NOT overweight yourself. Use clip-on weights.

Discover your own fishing spots.

Respect other fishermen. If he came first – it’s his spot for the time being. Move on to another spot further away.

Sewer outflows attract fish – that’s a fact. DON’T spearfish there. Nobody should eat fish from such a spot, plus you can get seriously ill from just being in the water.

Do you start feeling cold rather quickly in your wetsuit? Try using neoprene bermudas on top – they do magic.

DID YOU KNOW ?

MEDITERRANEAN SPEAROS

spearfisherz-free-lessons-deep-spearo

Med fish are scarce, wary and well known as hard to get. Such underwater hunting challenge yielded many great spearos. Some of them go to extremes where they descend to profound hunting depths that can exceed 40-50 meters.

Catching nice specimens of the illusive and highly prized game species at such depths is risky and requires good fitness, complete relaxation, razor sharp focus and adequate levels of freediving & spearfishing knowledge, skills and capabilities.
